Learn more about Lumenate.

Here’s a list of frequently asked questions to help you with your experience.

For some people, holding their phone in their hands in a dark room is all they need to run a great Lumenate session. For others, using external kit like phone holders or clamps for a hands-free experience can be a game changer.

When it comes to holding your phone, here’s our top 2 methods based on how the Lumenate team use the app in their own lives:

1. Use a neck phone holder: A great option allowing you to stand, lay down & sit. You can also move around a little while keeping your phone’s light in front of your eyes.

2. Mount your device to a phone clamp: This is perfect if you regularly use Lumenate near a desk, table or headboard on your bed.

When it comes to blocking light (both external light disturbing you, and your phone’s light disturbing others), here’s our top tips:

1.  Hide under a duvet: This is useful for when you’re in bed, using things you’ll likely already have. Please note, this option might disturb a partner.

2. Make a ‘light blanket’: This DIY version uses a personal blanket or head covering to create total darkness. It’s handy for when you want something you can carry with you, and/or something that blocks close to 100% of light.

You can create these by purchasing a sheet of black-out fabric from a haberdashery or fabric shop.  You can then cut into pieces that suit you. The advantages with this are:

  • They block out close to all light (in and out)
  • They are lightweight
  • The fabric is typically inexpensive (enough fabric for 4 blankets is typically less than £5

One downside with these is – as they’re so good at blocking out light – they aren’t very breathable. When using, make sure that you allow a small amount of the blanket to bellow so that air can easily flow in and out of your little “darkness tent”.

Lumenate provides a unique, multisensory experience. To maximise the impact of each session, it’s important to find a comfortable position that best suits you.

To help you get started, here are some tried and tested methods loved by our community:

  1. Lie down on your back in bed, resting your phone against your chest (or a pillow).

2. Sit with your phone on the table. Cross your arms and cover the phone, making a dark space.

  • This is perfect for short, middle-of-the-day sessions.

3. Lie down on your bed facing sideways with your device resting against a pillow (or secured by your hand).

  • Please note, you won’t be able to easily use headphones in this position.

4. Sit on a chair, using the arm rests to support your elbows.

  • You can also rest your elbows on your body.

5. If you’re able, sit on a chair and use your bent legs as a rest for your arms to lean against.

The short answer is, yes. Lumenate works best in a dark environment. Try to choose a space that you can make as dark as possible, however, when this is not possible you can also create a dark space directly around you by covering yourself with a blanket or something else that will block out the light.

Once you’ve found a comfortable position, we recommend that you hold your phone a few inches in front of your face.

Due to differences in phone hardware and eye sensitivity, it’s hard to say how close (though the most intense experiences have been reported at around 5-10 cm in front of your eyes).

We recommend that you regularly try adjusting, moving the phone forwards and backwards until you find what works best for you.

We’ve found these tips and tricks to be useful:

Find a dark space: If it’s still bright outside you can try your first Lumenate session under a duvet or in a bathroom with your blinds closed.

Light Intensity: You can control the intensity of the experience by moving the flashlight towards or away from your eyes. The closer it is, the stronger the effect. If you’re at all nervous, we suggest starting with the phone an arms length away, where you’ll barely notice the effects at all, then move it closer once you’re comfortable.

Get Comfortable: Lumenate provides a unique, multisensory experience. To maximise the impact of each session, it’s important to find a comfortable position that best suits you. Read about different phone holding positions via our FAQ.

Use HeadphonesWe strongly recommend using headphones or good quality speakers for your experience. Not only will this allow you to hear the music in far higher depth and fidelity but it will also mean that you are less likely to be distracted by other ambient sounds.

Other than that, the app does all the hard work for you so just close your eyes, turn your phone so the flashlight is facing you then sit back and watch the kaleidoscope of colours created by your very own subconscious.

We have a thriving Facebook Community that celebrates and inspires people to live freer and more fulfilling lives through exploring altered states of consciousness.

This group is a safe place to share and discuss your Lumenate experiences with each other.

That is absolutely okay! It often takes new users a few tries to fully relax into the experience, perhaps try a different session next time and see if it resonates better with you.

If there is anything worrying you though, please drop us a message via our contact form and we will be in touch within a few hours.

And remember that you are in full control, if you want to stop a session simply put your phone down.

We’re looking to start up group sessions again in the near future! Keep your eyes on this space!

Lumenate's Group Experience custom light

Lumenate group sessions make use of our custom designed 360 degree stroboscopic light to guide a circle of participants into a unique, deeply meditative, semi-psychedelic brain state.

Combined with intention setting and integration exercises, led by our skilled facilitators, we transform this enjoyable experience into a powerful platform for personal growth and self discovery.

We will definitely tackle different languages in the future, as for now, we are focusing on making the English version as good as we can.

What a thoughtful idea. Thanks for wanting to share Lumenate with others.  It’s so awesome and kind that you’d like to gift someone a Lumenate subscription.

The best way to do this, is to get them an Apple or Android gift-card and let them know what the credit is for.

If you have recently switched phones or devices, you might need to restore your purchases via your device’s app store. Once you do this, your access should come back.

We’re so sorry to hear that you want to cancel. If there is anything we can do to help you, please reach out via [email protected].

You can cancel from your subscription settings via the App Store or Google Play. We’ll be very sad to see you go!

We found the consumption of alcohol, even at fairly low levels, substantially dampens the experience. Not only does the intensity of the experience drastically lower, but the level to which the brain synchronises with the flashes also massively reduces.

Intention setting, referred to by some as attention setting, is the act of shifting your focus or attention towards what you wish to get out of the experience. By doing this, you prime your mind to be more receptive to any information that may relate to this intention.

At Lumenate, we encourage our users to work on setting their intentions before every session.

During the guided sessions, we take you through the intention setting step by step, guiding you towards a specific area that is likely to be of high value to you. Each session starts with a specific topic and then works with you through a series of questions to find an individual focus that is relevant to your life at this point. To help you get the most out of this process, we also put the most fundamental question in the session overview.

Our unguided sessions provide a bit more freedom, allowing you to come with your own pre-determined intention.

Tip: A suitable intention should be clear and specific, if it is your first time setting one, we suggest following the intention setting exercise.

Regardless of which session you choose, we will always focus on helping you to create intentions related to achieving successive personal growth cycles, helping you to live a freer and more fulfilling life.

When doing a Lumenate session, you’re able to explore your feelings through the colours, shapes and emotions that arise.

However, without proper integration, any insights gleaned typically fail to evolve and deliver value, slowly fading away and becoming nothing but faint memories.

Be it through writing,  drawing, or thinking deeply, capturing your reflections from different angles are very important towards your practice.

This is why we’ve created a special journal tool which allows you to immediately explore and capture your experience through writing. Your journal is a safe space as it’s entirely private and we will never read or share them with other people.

As these insights develop through further thought, creative explorations or conversations with others, we recommend returning to your journal via your profile settings and adding further entries to record your progression.

Definitely. One of the best ways to make the most of your sessions is to intentionally breathe before a session. Even in just a few slow, deep breaths, you signal to your body to relax

This not only helps you to centre yourself and become more present in the moment, but it also measurably increases meditative theta brainwave activity.

In turn, this shift in brainwave frequencies helps to guide you into a more dreamlike state well suited to exploring your subconscious thoughts and feelings.
